Water Damage What do I do???
When you walk in and find a scene like this... What do you do?

A) Call the Plumber?
B) Call you Insurance Agent?
C) Call your Insurance Company Claims Department?
D) or Call YOUR Emergency Restoration Contractor?
If you chose D your answer was correct.
So, how did you reach that conclusion? Who knows anything about this kind of situation that can really help you? Read the answers to these questions and next time you find yourself in this situation you will be much better equipped to handle it.
Plumbers handle plumbing. They are experts in fixing clogged drains, fixing broken pipes, installing faucets and toilets if you ever need it. Plumbers are unlikely to know anything about Insurance and they don't know anything about restorative drying either. When you encounter yourself in the situation described above, the first thing that you want to do is run and close the main water shut off valve. This will stop water from continuously spreading throughout your home or business. If you wait for the plumber to shut off your water, you just might have allowed another 1,000 gallons of water into your home.
Your Insurance Agents is not the right answer either. Insurance Agents are experts in selling Insurance policies. They are great at understanding customer needs and issuing a policy that best fits the customer requirements. Agents do not understand anything about plumbing and much worst about restorative or emergency water extraction. If you call your Insurance Agents, odds are that he or she will refer to your Insurance company claims department. By the time you get through the claims department, another 1,000 gallons of water just poured into your home or business.
Insurance Company Claims Department are experts are taking the information and assigning your claim to an Adjuster. After they spend 15 - 30 minutes with you on the phone they will advise you to call a Restoration Contractor. Claims Managers know that your policy says that YOU are required to do whatever it takes to mitigate the loss. If you don't take necessary steps to mitigate the loss they can deny your claim. This means, that according to the terms of your policy, you are required to do what ever it takes to minimize the loss (for the Insurance Company off course.) Some Insurance Companies have established Networks of "Preferred Restoration Contractors" that get all their business. The reason they are called "Preferred" is because they get volumes of business from the Insurance Companies and therefore have a huge interest in the well being of the Insurance Company. Preferred Restoration Contractors don't need to work hard for your business because they know they have it made.
YOUR Restoration Contractor on the other hand, works for YOU. They understand the Insurance Repair Business and they look after YOUR best interest. They know restorative drying better than anyone else. They know what it will take to effectively dry your property and prevent microorganisms (MOLD) growth. Your Restoration Contractor is likely to advise you when to remove that soaked carpet or when to remove a kitchen cabinet. Your Plumber, your Insurance Agent, and your Claims Department don't know anything about this and are unable to advise you on how to do it. YOUR Restoration Contractor is an expert at documenting your loss, at removing as much as and as fast as possible the water of your home. They will not cut corners like your Insurance Company "Preferred Contractor."
Ok, so how do you choose a Restoration Contractor when you are under the gun or 12" under water?
The unfortunate truth is that this is not so simple. You are likely to run to the biggest add on the yellow pages thinking that must the best company around. You are likely to go to the Internet and pick one with the most catchy add. if that is how you choose an Emergency Response Restoration Contractor you may be in for a rude awakening.
Bottom line is this.
