Furniture and Upholstery Cleaning Codes

There are many fabrics out there that require special attention and treatment.

There are many differences in fabrics. Some of the cleaning instructions found on clothing labels include: use cold water, use hot water, hand wash, hang dry, dry clean only, etc. Fabrics on furniture have very special needs, too. Although most furniture will have labels with cleaning instructions or cleaning codes, they are not always so helpful.

There are only three cleaning codes for upholstery:

• W: stands for water. This fabric should be safe to clean with water based products.
• S: solvent cleaning is required.
• X: do not clean by any method. Vacuum only.

Other labels on furniture are not helpful either. They never tell you what the fabric is made from. (No, the little white and black labels that begin with "All new material consisting of" are not referring to the fabric of the surface of the furniture itself, but rather the batting and foam that make up the inside of the furniture.)

Upholstery Cleaning Tips

1. Ask for the fiber content of the fabric when you buy new furniture. It will not be on any of the labels, and it will probably not be on any of the publication that come with the furniture, either. The information is available though, if you ask for it. (Fewer than 1% of customers know the exact content of the fabrics on any of their furniture.)
